Badminton’s origins date back thousands of years. It is thought sports played with a shuttlecock and racquets developed in ancient Greece around 2000 years ago, but can also be traced to India and China.
The modern game of badminton takes its name from Badminton House which was the home of the Duke of Beaufort in the English county of Gloucestershire. In 1873 the Duke of Beaufort introduced to his guests this game called badminton at Badminton House at one of his lawn parties.The first set of written rules appeared in 1877 and was introduced by the Bath Badminton Club. The first national organising body was established in 1893.
